The Third Space
Location: Siteless
Programme: Home of the Future
The ‘Third Space’ investigates how the domestic realm could be affected by transformations occurring in digital interface design; where 2D-based ‘point-and-click’ user controls are transitioning into more intuitively-operated immersive 3D environments.
By designing both the physical home of the future and the virtual environments it can host, the project speculates on a Post-Covid world where houses do not have computers in them, but are computers themselves. The home becomes responsively robotic and rearranges itself to support the resident’s virtual inhabitation, but also becomes a realm for global exploration, entertainment and deep-thought.
The haptic installation, where physical anchors tether us to the ‘real world’, acts in tandem with dream-like explorations into what might constitute ‘everyday living’. Architecture’s role in learning, working, socialising and living communally online, is explored. Spatial distance is somehow reduced to the extent that it collapses back in on us, forming new worlds within worlds.
With ‘George XP’ as our virtual smart companion, we dive headlong into an ever-expanding architectural universe, without ever having to leave our front door.
