B-Pro RC12 Videogame Urbanism
2020-2021
RC12 employs the medium of video games to explore and redefine issues concerning urban design, natural systems and societal structures. As a process of design and representation, video games allow for a comprehensive understanding of complex systems by the students but also for the engagement of wider audiences in the design of cities and urban structures.
As a design tutor within this research cluster, I had the opportunity to teach students about virtual environment design, technical skills on lighting, materials, textures, user interfaces, sound and many other elements that make up a video game.
Being a co-tutor with Luke Pearson and Sandra Youkhana, I had the privilege to participate in design tutorials alongside structuring my own independent media sessions. Keeping up with the students’ projects, allowed me to approach skills building from the perspective of narrative and building a three dimensional argument for each project. Whether it was about lighting in Unity or animating diagrams in AfterEffects, the students were encouraged to reflect on how each skill should be used for their project specifically, to explain and explore complex ideas.
